Customer reviews on amazon. Here is a typical reader comment: "The book's approach is so intuitive, it almost leads you by the hand into the world of jazz. Certainly jazz is freedom of expression, but you have to know what you're doing and this book is the tool for that Read more Read less. Frequently bought together.

I bought this book trusting good reviews, but I'm wondering if some of these reviewers really looked it through.

While I appreciate that it handles topics about jazz theory comprehensively, there were so many errors especially on "Exercises" of every chapter that it made me lose my motivation having said that, I have already read it thoroughly twice and tackled all exercises.

Also, some descriptions are too dry to grasp what the authors mean. I wasn't alone. Furthermore, I wonder why the authors chose only completely unfamiliar songs written by Mr. Bahha one of the authors as reference tracks with no audio guide. I wish they had picked up at least a couple of jazz standards we know well.

I'm afraid Hal Leonard won't be interested in publishing the 2nd edition, but hopefully, either of the authors will upload something like a list of errata on their websites. Apart from that the book has wayyy too many errors, and should have been checked before it was sent out.

A lot of the references to answers in the back are just wrong, completely different examples. Really poor planning on the publishers part. I would have preferred to grab a different book for a jazz harmony course, im sure there's one out there which has all the same information and less errors.

Requires a student who already has a good knowledge of music to be able to understand this book. It is very well written and helpful for the serious jazz student. This book is phenomenal. I'm a professional musician and composer with a classical background and I love getting theory books to get new ideas and understand non-classical methods of thinking.

I can honestly say that this book is one of the best I've ever found. Because it was written by both a jazz musician and classical musician, ideas are explained in ways that are very easy for me to relate to, but the book also reveals jazz concepts I was unfamiliar with. I have learned a ton from this book and it is a permanent and welcome addition to my library.

It is well written, easy to understand, flows well, and is organized very clearly. I have to say, I wish I had gotten this instead of getting Levine's book years ago. I'm still glad I have Levine's book, but I find this to be a great counterweight to it. My only issue is that there are several typos I discovered within the first minutes of reading through it. Some chords are mislabeled, Usually when this happens it is pretty obvious so no harm no foul, but it is the only hangup in an otherwise outstanding text.

Highly recommended. Good jazz theory book. Go to Amazon. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands. Alexa Actionable Analytics for the Web.

The next-to-smallest interval is the tone, or whole step. This is the distance between notes that are two keys apart on the piano. For instance, from C to D is a whole step. The semitone and tone form the basis for measurement of larger intervals. Interval measurements have two parts: quantity and quality. For example, the interval formed by the notes C and G will always be some type of 5th, regardless of the quality of C or G flat or sharp.
