The mating behavior of eight couples of Enteroctopus megalocyathus was evaluated under laboratory conditions by videotaping for 24 h. The precopulatory behavior CP was characterized by three patterns swimming, exhibition and contact and copulatory behavior CC was characterized by display of a single pattern copulation.

Of the total interaction time between octopuses, Between times of males and females were not significantly different by pattern. There was a trend towards longer periods of mating where the female weight was higher than the male, suggesting that female weight is a determining factor in the duration of mating encounters. One computer is able to host more than one board and therefore can control an array of FIERA detector electronics. The upgraded PULPO is able to handle 29 temperature sensors, control 8 heaters and one shutter, read out one vacuum sensor and log any combination of parameters.

The giant Pacific octopus Enteroctopus dofleini is a popular exhibit species in public display aquaria, but information on health and disease is limited. This retrospective review evaluates time in collection and describes antemortem clinical signs and pathology of giant Pacific octopuses in an aquarium setting. Between March and December , there were 19 mortalities: eight males, 10 females, and one individual whose sex was not recorded. Ten Minimal changes were noted on gross necropsy but branchitis was histologically evident in 14 octopuses, often in conjunction with amoeboid or flagellate parasites.

Senescence, parasitism, and husbandry were all important contributors to mortality and should be considered when caring for captive octopuses.

Microsatellite marker isolation and development for the giant Pacific Octopus Enteroctopus dofleini. We isolated and developed 18 novel microsatellite markers for the giant Pacific octopus Enteroctopus dofleini and examined them for 31 individuals from Prince William Sound PWS , Alaska. Seven loci deviated from Hardy—Weinberg Equilibrium HWE due to heterozygote deficiency for the PWS population, although deviations were not observed for all these loci in other populations, suggesting the PWS population is not in mutation-drift equilibrium.

These novel microsatellite loci yielded sufficient genetic diversity for potential use in population genetics, individual identification, and parentage studies. Asimismo se consideran las lesiones por dilac Full Text Available Objetivo. A suite of eight variable microsatellite markers developed from giant Pacific octopuses were amplified in these samples to determine population diversity, structure, relatedness and paternity.

The majority of loci met Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium expectations within each population. Several egg strings from the BC population were collected from three female octopus dens for relatedness and paternity analyses. Results suggest strong support for multiple paternity within one egg clutch with progeny sired by between two to four males.

Some 19 octopuses with a range of mantle length between 50 and mm were sampled from commercial landings in - The growth and survival of juvenile octopus, Octopus mimus, from northern Chile, fed three different diets were analyze during 57 days.

Two of the diets A and B were wet diets stuffed in lamb gut with a gelatin solution, and the third C was. La dentina expuesta por el desgaste dental presenta. A total of 52 individuals were collected, comprising three families Octopodidae, Sepiolidae, Onychoteuthidae and four species Robsonella fontaniana, Enteroctopus megalocyathus , Semirossia patagonica, an undetermined Onychoteuthidae species. Paralarvae of Octopodidae have been previously recorded in northern and southern Chile; however, for Sepiolidae and Onychoteuthidae, this is the first record of early life stages in Chilean waters.

Includes data on habitat pot gear study: fishing locations, Nuclear and mitochondrial markers reveal evidence for genetically segregated cryptic speciation in giant Pacific octopuses from Prince William Sound, Alaska. Multiple species of large octopus are known from the north Pacific waters around Japan, however only one large species is known in the Gulf of Alaska the giant Pacific octopus, Enteroctopus dofleini.

Current taxonomy of E. Here, we used two mitochondrial genes cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase I , three nuclear genes rhodopsin, octopine dehydrogenase, and paired-box 6 , and 18 microsatellite loci for phylogeographic and phylogenetic analyses of octopuses collected from across southcentral and the eastern Aleutian Islands Dutch Harbor , Alaska.

Our results suggest the presence of a cryptic Enteroctopus species that is allied to, but distinguished from E. Existence of an undescribed and previously unrecognized taxon raises important questions about the taxonomy of octopus in southcentral Alaska waters. Constructive or destructive processes of pulp tissue depend on many factors: anatomic topography, particular physiology, or intensity and duration of infectious, mechanical and chemical aggression.

Also irritation of the pulpo -dentinal complex induce histologic and physiologic changes. The positive diagnosis of hyperemia, acute or chronic pulpitis, pulpal necrosis and acute or chronic apical abscess is performed by clinical investigations which allow a differential diagnosis with other dental or extra-dental diseases. Estrategias de forrajeo de Robsonella fontaniana d'Orbigny, Cephalopoda: Octopodidae. Para las prueba Study on the physiological activities of gamma-irradiated seafood cooking drips.

Cooking drips which were obtained as by-product after seafood processing in the food industries, still contain lost of proteins, carbohydrates, and other functional materials. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on the biological activities of seafood cooking drips. When the cooking drips of Hizikia fusiformis, Enteroctopus dofleini and Thunnus thynnus were irradiated, the antioxidant activities, whitening effect, and angiotensin I converting enzyme inhibition activity of the ethanol extract from seafood cooking drips were all increased by gamma irradiation.

This was because of the increased extraction efficiency of available compounds by irradiation. These results suggested that the seafood cooking drips, wasted as by-products, can be used as functional compounds with gamma irradiation treatment.

Effect of gamma irradiation on the amino acid contents of seafood cooking drips. In this study, the effects of gamma irradiation on the change of structural and free amino acids contents of cooking drips from Hizikia fusiformis HF and Enteroctopus dofleini ED were investigated.

The main structural amino acids were glutamic acid in HF cooking drip, and glutamic acid, glycine, arginine and aspartic acid in ED cooking drip, respectively. The concentrations of structural amino acids in both cooking drip extracts were decreased by the gamma irradiation at the dose of 10 kGy. Especially, the sulfur-containing amino acids were severely degraded by the irradiation. In free amino acid, ED cooking drip extract was contained the larger amount of free amino acid than that of HF cooking drip affecting its rich flavor.

The free amino acid concentrations of cooking drips extracts from HF and ED were both increased by irradiation, and it explained the higher protein content by the irradiation. Genotoxicological safety of the ethanol extract from seafood cooking drips by gamma irradiation. Although seafood cooking drips were the byproducts from the fishery industry it was known that the cooking drips had many nutrients and could be used as functional materials. Previously, the physiological properties of cooking drips were shown to be increased by a gamma irradiation.

But, there was no report on the safe for the genotoxicity on the irradiation. In this study, the genotoxicity of the cooking drips from Hizikia fusiformis, Enteroctopus dofleni and Thunnus thynnus was evaluated by the Ames test Salmonella typhimurium reversion assay and the SOS chromotest. The results from all samples were negative in the bacterial reversion assay with S. No mutagenicity was detected in the assay, both with and without metabolic activation. The SOS chromotest also indicated that the gamma-irradiated seafood cooking drips did not show any mutagenicity.

Therefore, this study indicated that gamma irradiation could be used for the hygiene, functional properties and processibility of seafood cooking drips. Study on the changes in phyicochemical properties of seafood cooking drips by gamma ray irradiation. Cooking drips which were obtained as by-product after seafood processing in the food industries, still contain lots of proteins, carbohydrates, and other functional materials. But, the seafood cooking drips are easily contaminated because of its rich nutrients, and their color are very dark.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on the quality of seafood cooking drips including Hizikia fusiformis, Enteroctopus dofleini, and Thunnus thynnus. The Hunter's color values L, Brightness of H. The crude protein content and crude lipid content were increased by gamma irradiation. These results indicated that gamma irradiation increased extraction efficiency of available compounds in cooking drips.

Enteroctopus megalocyathus (Gould, 1852)

Octopuses Enteroctopus dofleini recognize individual humans. This study exposed 8 Enteroctopus dofleini separately to 2 unfamiliar individual humans over a 2-week period under differing circumstances. One person consistently fed the octopuses and the other touched them with a bristly stick. Each human recorded octopus body patterns, behaviors, and respiration rates directly after each treatment.

As for many other commercially exploited octopodid species, there are no detailed descriptions of the eggs and hatchlings of Enteroctopus megalocyathus that can be used for the identification of individuals captured in plankton samples. Eggs, clutches and hatchlings are described here for the first time and compared with those of both other Patagonian octopodids and other Enteroctopus species. Relative to other Enteroctopus, hatchlings were large with total length TL Dorsal chromatophores were more abundant than ventral ones, and their shape and distribution created a very distinctive pattern. Eggs and hatchlings were found to have several characteristics that can be used for species identification.
